The Shelbourne Racecourse Program documents trotting in Ireland to August of 1916. This is just one piece of the history that should be researched and documents. Not only through photographs and old newsprint, but through the stories that are now told soon to be forgotten.

Images of Irish Harness Racing at Portmarnock Raceway -- July 1, 2012
We drove from Stroketown, Roscommon County toward Dublin and Portmarnock at 10:30. We asked a local Irishman where the track was located. From where we were, one left and two rights. We arrived at the track and were greeted by Bernie Kelly and Joe Sheridan. After brief conversation, Damian and I headed for the paddocks. We found dedicated and spirited horsemen. It was truly a family affair and a love of the horse -- a love of the sport!

Standardbred Horse Racing in Ireland -- Portmarnock Raceway
On Sunday, July 1st, Damain Brady, my son-in-law, and I traveled from Strokestown, County Roscommon to Portmarnock just outside Dublin. Prior to our family's visit to Ireland, I had contacted Bernadette (Bernie) Kelly, Secretary of the Irish Harness Racing Clubs. As we arrived at the raceway we were greeted by Bernie and Joe Sheridan, an owner and trainer. During our day at the raceway we met wonderful people in a great family atmosphere. More to come!
