Farmers, businessmen, and families formed the early agricultural societies. The societies provided a forum for educating the farmer in regarding to effective agricultural practices and in best practices for the breeding of horses, cattle, and other livestock. The societies purchased land for a fairground. Often trotting tracks were built as part of the fairgrounds. Fourteen acres were required to built a half mile track with buildings.
