1940 Aerials of Androscoggin's Lost Trotting Parks -- Androscoggin Valley Soil and Water Conservation District

The Elmwood Stud Farm specialized in carriage horses. Owned by Sanborn of Chase and Sanborn Coffee, the farm was located on what is the Dunn Road in Auburn, Maine on the Poland line. There may be an issue with the 1940 photo in that it shows water next to the trotting track that is not there today.

On August 19, 2011 I visited with Lionel Furland (age 94) and Jim McKay (age 91). Both men have been lifelong residents of East Poland and the area known as Lewiston Junction, Maine. My visit was wonderful. Lionel and Jim have been lifelong friends. So my visit gave them a chance to retell old stories and remember together the years when they were young and the horse was ending its reign as king. After my visit with Lionel and Jim, Lionel's son Dennis gave me a tour of the area -- the discontinued road behind the Elmwood Farm property, up the Torrey Road to the location of Elmwood Farm Station, and then back down the Dunn Road through Lewiston Junction Road and back to Jim MacKay's farm. Young Jim McKay discovered that the 1939 aerial presenting the Lewistion Junction area was actually the New Gloucester trotting park. Oddly, this aerial view appeared similar to the Google Earth aerial of the area. This prompted a return to the Androscoggin Soil and Water District. Bob Bills helped me located the correct aerial photos. We reviewed these photos with great care. Unfortunately, we could find evidence of a practice track that was identified in the engraving of the Elmwood Stud Farm.
