This chart from the Horse Review Harness Racing Guide chronicles Nelson's pursuit of the Stallion's World Record in a high wheel sulky on a regulation mile track. C.H. Nelson, also called Hod Nelson, with his horse Nelson journeyed by train to other states where Nelson's records were recorded. His best time with a high wheel sulky on regulation mile track was 2.10. Given the era and travel by travel, Nelson championship tour was truly extraordinary. His best United States time with a bicycle wheel sulky was recorded at Rigby Park in South Portland, Maine in 2.09. His best time, not recognized in the United States, was at the Moosepath Trotting Park in St. John, NB. His time -- 2.07 3/4. The bicycle wheel sulky was first introduced in 1892.
I have been corresponding by e-mail with Australian John Peck. John is helping me with information on Nelson's Australia connection. It appears that the Nelson bloodline has had a much greater impact in Australia and Canada than in the United States. John also provided me with Nelson's final siring statistics from the Wallace Yearbooks.
Nelson's Siring Statistics:
He sired 65 Standard Performers --
36 Trotters and 29 Pacers
He sired 20 sires who produced 53 standard performers --
20 Trotters, 33 Pacers
He sired 27 dams who produced 35 standard performers --
15 Trotters, 20 Pacers
